Williams contracts ExxonMobil for CO2 transportation and storage services

Energy infrastructure company Williams has contracted ExxonMobil to provide CO2 transportation and permanent storage services, strengthening the development of integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure in the US Gulf Coast region.

Under the agreement, ExxonMobil will transport and permanently store up to 1 million tonnes per annum of CO2 captured from Williams’ natural gas-fired power facility. The captured CO2 will be managed through ExxonMobil’s CCS network, while the facility is expected to supply lower-emissions electricity to large industrial customers.

The agreement highlights the role of shared CCS networks in supporting industrial decarbonisation. By connecting emissions sources with transport infrastructure and permanent storage sites, these networks can enable companies to manage captured CO2 without developing dedicated systems of their own.

ExxonMobil has been developing an integrated carbon management business combining CO2 transport infrastructure, storage capacity and subsurface expertise. The company is building a portfolio of carbon storage projects along the US Gulf Coast and has signed agreements with industrial customers seeking permanent storage solutions.

For Williams, the agreement supports the company’s efforts to expand its carbon management capabilities and provide lower-carbon solutions alongside its existing energy infrastructure portfolio.

The partnership comes as demand grows for large-scale CO2 management solutions, particularly among industries seeking pathways to reduce hard-to-abate emissions. By linking captured CO2 with permanent geological storage, projects such as this are helping establish the infrastructure needed for a broader carbon management market.
