Webinar exploring three-phase flow in porous media for CCS and hydrogen storage

Understanding three-phase flow in porous media is essential for improving technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen storage and fuel cells, where the movement and interaction of multiple fluid phases directly affect system performance.

To explore this topic, the EAGE Technical Community on EOR/IOR recently hosted a webinar “Effect of the Immiscible to Miscible Transition on Three-Phase Displacement in Systems of Arbitrary Wettability” with guest speaker Saba Mahmoudvand (Heriot-Watt University).

The webinar explored how wettability influences pore occupancy sequences and saturation paths as systems transition from immiscible to miscible flow conditions. Using a validated physics-based model, the presentation examined the mechanisms governing three-phase displacement at the pore scale and compared theoretical predictions with experimental observations and pore network modelling. These insights could help improve the understanding and prediction of multiphase flow in subsurface reservoirs, supporting the optimisation of CCS, hydrogen storage and other energy transition technologies.
