InCapture Pty Ltd and Yara Pilbara Fertilisers Pty Ltd have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the development of large-scale offshore carbon storage infrastructure in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
The companies will assess the technical, regulatory and commercial pathways for a potential multi-user Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Hub, which could provide industrial emitters across the Pilbara with access to shared offshore carbon storage.
The collaboration brings together Yara, operator of one of the world’s largest ammonia production facilities on the Burrup Peninsula, and InCapture, operator of GHG Assessment Permit G-15-AP, located offshore the Pilbara.
G-15-AP is being assessed as a dedicated carbon storage project capable of supporting multiple industrial customers across the region. It is focused on the permanent geological storage of carbon dioxide within saline aquifers and is independent of hydrocarbon production, without relying on the repurposing or abandonment of existing oil and gas infrastructure.
The companies said the collaboration has the potential to support emissions reduction across some of Australia’s key industrial and export sectors while helping maintain the Pilbara’s long-term competitiveness as a major resources and industrial region.
Technical assessment of G-15-AP is continuing through InCapture and joint venture participant SK earthon Australia Pty Ltd, with support from Halliburton and Wood.
The joint venture is targeting the fourth quarter of 2026 to submit a Declaration of Identified Storage Formation (DoSF), a key Australian Commonwealth Government regulatory milestone in the development of offshore carbon storage.
Julia Davies, Managing Director of InCapture, said Yara’s participation marked an important milestone for G-15-AP and reflected the growing need for large-scale carbon storage infrastructure in the region. “The Pilbara is one of Australia’s most important industrial regions. Maintaining its long-term competitiveness will require practical and scalable solutions that enable industry to reduce emissions while continuing to invest, manufacture and export from the region. G-15-AP has the potential to provide that infrastructure through dedicated offshore storage that can be accessed by multiple industrial customers.”
Laurent Trost, Chief Operating Officer of Yara Pilbara, said the MOU reflected the company’s technology agnostic approach to decarbonising its world scale production operations. “Construction of a renewable hydrogen pilot plant is well advanced on our lease but we believe as a critical manufacturer for domestic and international markets that large-scale CCS offers the greatest potential to swiftly reduce our carbon emissions.”
