Annual CO2 stored by project - 2026 figure - The London Register of Subsurface CO2 Storage

Global CO2 storage surpasses 421 million tonnes

The 2026 Annual Report of the London Register of Subsurface CO2 Storage, led by Imperial College London researchers Prof Sam Krevor and Dr Xiaowei Gao, tracks reported CO2 storage by operational projects worldwide. This year’s edition covers data from 1996 to 2025, expanding the Register to 70 records across 17 countries on six continents.

Here are the key findings:

  • Cumulative storage: 421.7 million tonnes of CO2 reported stored since 1996.
  • Record annual storage: 43.6 million tonnes in 2024, up 4.5% from the revised 2023 total of 41.7 million tonnes.
  • Global reach: 70 records covering 69 individual projects and one company-level aggregate across 17 countries.
  • Long-term growth: Annual reported storage more than doubled between 2016 and 2024, rising from 21.0 million to 43.6 million tonnes.
  • 2025 reporting: Preliminary data show 36.2 million tonnes reported by 29 projects in 12 countries.

A note on the numbers: The 2025 figures are incomplete and should not be interpreted as a full-year global total. The report also highlights uncertainties in accounting for recycled CO2 and permanent storage, particularly at projects involving oil recovery. Geological CO2 storage may need to reach one billion tonnes or more annually by 2050 to align with climate pathways limiting warming to 1.5°C.

The Register is supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering through its Research Chairs and Senior Research Fellowships programme, alongside stakeholders from academia, industry and government.
