Petrogas selects Worley for pre-FEED study of Dutch Abeona CCS project

Petrogas has selected Worley to deliver the pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) study for the Abeona CCS project in the Dutch North Sea.

The Abeona CCS project aims to develop a CO2 transport and storage hub for hard-to-abate industrial emitters in the North Sea Canal Area and other regions of the Netherlands. It will repurpose depleted offshore fields, including the Helm and Helder fields, as permanent CO2 storage sites, supported by a combination of existing infrastructure and new facilities.

A key element under assessment is the potential reuse of an existing pipeline to transport captured CO2 from the Port of Amsterdam to offshore injection facilities. This approach could help accelerate the development of CO2 transport infrastructure while reducing the need for new infrastructure.

Under the pre-FEED scope, Worley will refine the project concept, establish the technical basis for development, assess execution risks, and prepare cost estimates for future project phases. The company will also integrate the project’s main components, including offshore facilities and pipeline systems, to support a smooth transition into FEED.

The Abeona CCS project is expected to provide scalable CO2 storage capacity for Dutch industries seeking solutions to reduce emissions from sectors where direct decarbonisation options remain limited. Start-up is targeted for late 2030.

The project’s name also carries a symbolic meaning. Abeona, the Roman goddess of outward journeys and transitions, is derived from the Latin abeo, meaning “to depart or go forth”. The name reflects the project’s role in supporting the transition toward a lower-carbon society through permanent CO2 storage.
