Northern Lights – world’s first cross-border CO2 transport and storage facility

Northern Lights is the world’s first project enabling industrial companies to transport and securely store their CO2 emissions. Approved by the Norwegian government in 2020 and designated as a Project of Common Interest by the European Union, Northern Lights aims to reduce European industrial emissions by transporting, receiving, and permanently storing CO2 in geological formations approximately 2,600 meters below the seabed in the North Sea.

On 26 September 2024, the Norwegian Minister of Energy officially inaugurated the Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage facility in Øygarden, near Bergen. The facility is owned equally by Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, forming a unique collaboration among global energy leaders.

Northern Lights is an integral part of Norway’s full-scale CCS initiative named Longship, which encompasses the capture of CO2 from industrial sources, shipping it as liquid CO₂ to Øygarden, and transporting it via pipeline to the offshore storage site below the seabed in the North Sea for secure and permanent storage.
